Offline & reconnecting
Keep working in a shared project without a connection, what happens when you reconnect, how simultaneous edits merge, and what you see on an unreliable network.

A shared project is a full copy on your computer, so losing the connection doesn’t stop you. You can write, add and delete files, and comment while you’re offline.
Work without a connection
Section titled “Work without a connection”When the connection drops, the sync status changes to Offline. Changes waiting: followed by a number. That’s how many of your changes the server doesn’t have yet. They’re saved on your computer. They stay there if you quit Oleafly or restart your computer, and they go out the next time the project connects.
New figures and other files you add while offline wait too. A notice lists them as waiting to be shared until they upload.
When you reconnect
Section titled “When you reconnect”Oleafly reconnects by itself. It sends your waiting changes and brings in everyone else’s. The status shows Syncing, then Up to date.
Activity notes that you’re back online. If others changed the project while you were away, an entry says how many of their changes were merged:
- Show files lists the files that changed.
- Review opens a read-only view of those changes, grouped By person and By file.
How simultaneous edits merge
Section titled “How simultaneous edits merge”Edits merge character by character, not file by file. Two people can type in the same paragraph, online or offline, and both keep their text. Nobody needs to choose between two versions of a file.
Whole files work a little differently. If someone deleted a file that you edited while offline, your edits aren’t thrown away. The file goes to Recently deleted with your changes in it, Oleafly tells you, and you can restore it. If two people added a file with the same name, both files are kept.
An unreliable connection
Section titled “An unreliable connection”When the network comes and goes, the status moves between Reconnecting and Offline. Keep typing. Your changes wait on your computer and arrive once the connection holds, sometimes a few seconds late. Nothing is lost.
Networks that block live connections
Section titled “Networks that block live connections”Live editing normally uses a WebSocket connection. Some university and company networks block those. Oleafly notices and switches to a slower route that works over ordinary web requests. Every edit still arrives, with a little more delay. Oleafly tries the usual route again every minute and goes back to it as soon as it works.
Test connection in Settings → Collaboration shows when this happens: “Live edits take a slower route because this network blocks the usual one. They still arrive.”
When the server restarts
Section titled “When the server restarts”If the server goes away for a moment, for example while its admin updates it, the status shows Reconnecting or Offline. Oleafly carries on when the server is back.
If the server ever has to be restored from a backup, it’s missing the changes people made after that backup. Oleafly notices when it reconnects and sends your missing changes again. Usually nobody has to do anything. If the server’s admin asks you to, open the project once so Oleafly can send yours.
