Build references

Recognize scholarly links or create a safe, editable webpage citation without pretending every page exposes reliable metadata.

URL to BibTeX gives an ordinary link a place in a bibliography. Scholarly URLs are routed to their identifier lookup; other web addresses become an editable webpage record with the host and access date.

  • you have a DOI, arXiv, or PubMed link rather than the bare identifier;
  • you need to cite a webpage that has no better scholarly identifier;
  • you want a local starting record and plan to fill in the page title and author yourself.

Prefer a DOI or catalog identifier when one exists. A webpage URL can change, redirect, or disappear, and it may identify a landing page rather than the work itself.

  1. Open URL to BibTeX, or run /url-to-bibtex.
  2. Paste a full https:// or http:// address.
  3. Choose Build.
  4. If the link contains a recognized DOI, arXiv ID, or PMID, Oleafly retrieves that catalog record.
  5. For another webpage, replace Untitled webpage with the real page title and add the author, organization, date, and any other known fields.
  6. Copy the BibTeX or formatted citation.

For an ordinary webpage, the fallback record includes the URL, site host, and today’s access date. It does not scrape the page or guess an author from untrusted HTML.

Open the page and confirm the title, named author or organization, publication or update date, and canonical URL. If the page links to a report, dataset, or article with its own identifier, cite that underlying work instead.

Recognized scholarly lookups need a connection. Building and editing the generic webpage fallback happens on your device.
