Oleaflyv0.4.8

Find the guides for Oleafly's newest citation, editor, Typst, diagram, research, and agent features.

The newest work adds Zen mode and lets you cite from Zotero as you type. The editor also gets a theme for light mode and one for dark mode, in colors you can change. Before that, Typst caught up with LaTeX, every engine got the same document tools, and CLI agents became easier to set up and check. This page points to the full instructions rather than repeating a release-note list.

Type @ in a LaTeX, Typst, or Markdown file and your whole Zotero library shows up next to the project’s own references. Picking a paper inserts the citation and adds only that entry to the project’s .bib. Later, Add from Zotero and Update from Zotero keep the file in step with your library. It works with Zotero 7 open on the same computer, or with a zotero.org account.

Pick one editor theme for light mode and one for dark mode, and the editor switches with the app. Paper, a warm off-white, and One Light are new. Editor colors changes any color of a theme, with a live preview in LaTeX, Typst, and Markdown. Colors are grouped by role, so a heading, a citation, or an equation gets the same color in all three languages.

Press Ctrl+⌘⇧F (Shift+F11 on Windows and Linux) to hide the toolbar, sidebar, assistant, and terminal. Only the editor is left, with a Compile button in the corner. Press Esc twice to bring everything back.

Zen mode

Rename a file or drag it to another folder, and the \input, \includegraphics, #include, image(), and Markdown links that point to it change too. Oleafly asks first unless you tell it to always or never update them.

The default compile engine works for every new LaTeX project

Section titled “The default compile engine works for every new LaTeX project”

The engine you pick under Settings → Engines → LaTeX now applies to new projects, imports, converted documents, and trusted folders you open in place. Choose latexmk there and new projects compile with your own TeX installation from the start.

Set a default for new projects

⌘= and ⌘- zoom the whole app, ⌘, opens Settings, and ⌘⌥P shows or hides the PDF. The app and editor fonts can be any font installed on your computer. The editor also gets settings for line height, letter spacing, and the cursor’s width and color.

When Tectonic can’t build a document, the engine dialog opens on its own and can move the project to your system LaTeX. A banner above the editor offers Allow external commands for minted, PythonTeX, and \write18. On Linux, Oleafly now draws its own title bar and accepts files dropped from the file manager.

When Tectonic isn’t enough · Allow external commands · Install on Linux

Typst projects now have what LaTeX projects had, and a few things of their own. Pick a Typst version per project, from 0.11 to 0.15, and Oleafly downloads it and checks it against a published checksum. Packages come from Typst Universe and can live inside the project so it compiles offline. A project’s own fonts, build variants and reproducible builds reach both Typst and the language server.

In the editor, Typst gets Visual mode, folding, sticky headings, completion for functions, paths, labels and packages, rename and Format document. It also gets the figure, table, citation and equation tools LaTeX had. Go to PDF and clicking in the PDF jump between source and page. Exports include PNG, SVG, HTML, PDF/A and PDF/UA, and Preflight checks Typst sources too.

Packages, document settings and insights for every engine

Section titled “Packages, document settings and insights for every engine”

Three buttons on the editor toolbar now work the same way in LaTeX, Typst and Markdown, where they apply:

  • Packages searches CTAN for LaTeX, or Typst Universe for Typst, and adds the line that loads a package.
  • Document settings changes paper size, margins, font, language, line spacing and numbering. It edits your preamble, #set rules or front matter for you.
  • Document insights lists the figures, tables, equations, labels, citations and TODOs in a document, and copies its submission metadata.

One diagram composer for TikZ, Typst and Mermaid

Section titled “One diagram composer for TikZ, Typst and Mermaid”

The diagram composer now asks which language the diagram is for: TikZ for LaTeX, a fletcher diagram for Typst, or a Mermaid flowchart for Markdown. All three share the same canvas, and the code and the drawing stay in step in both directions. Draw a diagram on a document’s toolbar skips the question and uses that document’s language. A Mermaid diagram inserted into Markdown also appears in the compiled PDF.

Present any compiled PDF full screen, with an optional presenter view that shows the next slide, a timer and your notes.

The project search on the home screen understands qualifiers such as engine:typst, is:bookmarked and created:>@today-1w, plus AND, OR, parentheses and sorting. Suggestions appear as you type, and Advanced filters edits the same text.

Search your projects

Import your whole Zotero library into a project’s bibliography, and connect alphaXiv so the assistant can search and read papers from it.

Each CLI agent in Settings shows the program Oleafly found, and Test runs it before anything is saved. After an agent changes files, you can review each change and undo or redo it. The agent home also has research starting points, such as a literature sweep or a citation audit.

Type a word such as “theme”, “Zotero” or “spelling” in Settings to jump to it. A dot on a Reset button shows that something in that section differs from the default, and file paths stay blurred until you point at them.

The optional LaTeX tools gallery now contains 47 focused tools, including ten Typst converters. You can convert documents between LaTeX, Typst, Markdown, Word, HTML, PDFs, images, spreadsheets, and Mermaid diagrams; build and validate references; search for papers, labs, and deadlines; run statistical calculations; and use small writing helpers.

Each tool now has its own page with its input, steps, example, privacy behavior, limits, and a better route when the tool is not the right fit.

Two-pane tools have a draggable, keyboard-accessible divider. Each tool remembers its desktop split, while narrow windows stack the input and result.

Proofreading that understands source files

Section titled “Proofreading that understands source files”

Proofreading now combines spelling with Harper grammar and style checks in LaTeX, Typst, and Markdown. It skips source syntax that should not be treated as prose, then lets you replace a finding or ignore it for now, for one project, or everywhere. The academic profile adds checks suited to research writing, and you can disable an individual Harper rule from a finding.

The editor can pair math delimiters, brackets, and environments; continue lists; close the current environment; and complete package-aware commands, references, citations, and project paths. Separate settings let you turn automatic completion, brackets, math, or environment closing on or off.

Citation insertion follows the bibliography declared by the document, including common BibTeX and Biber setups. Library import accepts BibTeX, RIS, EndNote XML, and Zotero RDF. The reference cleaner previews normalized keys and duplicates before changing files, updates citations when keys change, and saves backups. New standalone tools cover DOI, arXiv, ISBN, PubMed, URLs, formatted citations, and eight citation styles.

Manage citations and bibliographies · Open the reference tools

Word and HTML documents can become LaTeX, Markdown, or Typst projects. Markdown can become LaTeX or Typst, and Typst can become LaTeX or Markdown. Open projects can export their supported routes to Word, HTML with MathML, Markdown, Typst, LaTeX, plain text, PDF, source ZIP, or a page image. LaTeX presentations and books can also export to PowerPoint or EPUB. Markdown projects offer both, and Typst projects offer EPUB.

Choose System or one of 21 languages under Settings → General → Language, from 简体中文 and 日本語 to Deutsch and Español. The interface changes immediately, without restarting. This setting controls app labels and messages. Document language, proofreading dictionaries and assistant output stay separate choices.

Preflight brings compile, layout, references, assets, blind-review, ATS, and accessibility findings into one place. Its PDF/UA section checks a defined machine-testable subset, and its tagged-PDF workflow prepares compatible LaTeX projects for LuaLaTeX. The guide explains which results are definite, which are heuristic, and why a clean run is not formal PDF/UA certification.

When a latexmk build reports a missing TeX file, Oleafly can find the TeX Live package that owns it, install that package, and compile again. The package manager can also search the full TeX Live catalog and shows whether a package lives in the system or personal tree.
