ISBN to BibTeX

ISBN to BibTeX turns the number on a book into a structured starting point. It is especially useful for books that would otherwise require typing a long title, publisher, edition, and author list by hand.

Use it when

• you are citing an entire book with a known ISBN;
• the edition matters and you can read the identifier from that edition;
• you want to inspect the metadata before adding it to a .bib file.

An ISBN identifies an edition and format, not every version of a title. A paperback, hardback, ebook, and later edition may have different identifiers. For a chapter in an edited volume, you will still need the chapter authors, title, and pages.

Look up the book

1. Open ISBN to BibTeX, or run /isbn-to-bibtex.
2. Enter an ISBN-10 or ISBN-13, with or without hyphens.
3. Choose Look up.
4. Review the authors or editors, title, year, publisher, edition information, and ISBN.
5. Copy the BibTeX or a formatted citation, or save it to a .bib file.

For example, 978-0-262-03561-3 and 9780262035613 identify the same ISBN after punctuation is removed.

Check book metadata carefully

Public catalogs may omit subtitles, translators, edition numbers, series, or editor roles. Names can also arrive in display order rather than the form your bibliography system expects.

The lookup needs a connection. Field editing, validation, and formatting happen locally. Confirm the result against the book’s title page and copyright page, not only a retailer listing.
