Dear Members of the Committee,

I am writing to express my strong motivation to join the Master of Science in
Distributed Systems at Northgate. My path from reliability engineer to
prospective researcher has been driven by a single question, how to make
software fail predictably, and your program offers the rare combination of
rigorous coursework and an industry-scale testbed that I need to pursue it.

During three years operating a geo-replicated storage service, I learned that
the failures that hurt most are the ones our tools cannot describe. I taught
myself formal modeling to close that gap and built a small verifier that caught
a latent stall in our production configuration. That success turned a practical
frustration into a research ambition, and it is the reason I am now seeking
graduate training rather than another operations role.

Northgate stands out for two reasons. First, the systems verification track
would give me the theoretical grounding my self-study has lacked. Second, your
faculty's collaborations with open-source database projects mirror exactly the
kind of work I want to do, where a proof turns into a patch that real operators
run. I am confident I would contribute the operational perspective that
complements a theory-heavy cohort.
