# Word to Typst

Convert a Word document into editable Typst and keep its extracted images with the result.

Word to Typst turns a `.docx` into Typst source you can compile. It keeps the document structure, converts Word equations to Typst math, and extracts embedded images so they travel with the text.

## Use it when

- a coauthor drafted in Word and the work continues in Typst;
- you want editable Typst rather than a Word file attached to a project;
- you are trying Typst with a document you already have.

Keep working in Word while Track Changes or review comments are still open. The conversion doesn't keep revision history.

## Convert the document

1. Open **Word to Typst**, or run `/word-to-typst`.
2. Choose a `.docx` file up to 128 MB.
3. Choose **Convert**.
4. Read the Typst source. Images from the document are extracted into an `assets/` folder that goes with it.
5. Save the result, or choose **Create project** to open it as a Typst project. Then compile it. When the document has images, the save button reads **Save ZIP** and keeps them with the source.

The bundled Pandoc does the conversion on your device. Headings, paragraphs, emphasis, lists, links, tables, footnotes, and Office Math equations map into Typst.

## What to check

Text boxes, floating shapes, complex tables, custom numbering, tracked changes, and comments may be simplified or dropped. Accept or reject tracked changes in a copy of the document before you convert it. After converting:

1. Compare every equation and table with the original.
2. Check that each image appears where it should, with the right caption.
3. Pick a Typst template and apply its layout.
4. Rebuild citations from reliable metadata rather than the text Word displayed.

You can also start from the library: **Import a project → Word document** creates a Typst project in one step. For a LaTeX destination, use [Word to LaTeX](/docs/tools/word-to-latex/).
