# Typst to Markdown

Convert Typst markup into portable Markdown you can copy, save, or open as a Markdown project.

Typst to Markdown keeps the words and the basic structure of a Typst draft and drops the page design. The result is plain text that a wiki, a repository, or a Markdown editor can use.

## Use it when

- the writing matters more than the page layout;
- you are moving notes or a draft into a Markdown system;
- a collaborator wants a simple source without Typst.

Stay in Typst when templates, `show` rules, or exact page design are part of the result.

## Convert a draft

1. Open **Typst to Markdown**, or run `/typst-to-markdown`.
2. Paste a Typst fragment or a complete document, or choose **Load example**.
3. Choose **Convert**.
4. Read the Markdown result.
5. Copy it, save `converted.md`, or choose **Create project** to open it as a Markdown project.

For example:

```typst
= Method
We minimize $L(theta)$ with two constraints.
- Bounded error
- Stable updates
```

becomes a Markdown heading, a paragraph with dollar-delimited math, and a bullet list.

## What needs a second look

The bundled Pandoc converts the source on your device. Headings, emphasis, links, lists, code, and common math usually map cleanly. Typst functions, `#let` definitions, `show` and `set` rules, packages, and figures with custom layout may not.

Check math delimiters, image paths, footnotes, references, and tables afterwards. To export a whole Typst project as Markdown, use the project's **Export** menu, which keeps more equations and references. [Export and convert a project](/docs/export/) covers it.

For the other direction, use [Markdown to Typst](/docs/tools/markdown-to-typst/). For a word-processing handoff, use [Typst to Word](/docs/tools/typst-to-word/).
