# DOI to BibTeX

Retrieve a DOI record, correct its fields, and export clean BibTeX or a formatted citation.

A DOI is usually the shortest reliable path from a paper to structured citation data. DOI to BibTeX retrieves the matching record and keeps the fields editable before anything reaches your bibliography.

## Use it when

- the article, dataset, chapter, or report has a DOI;
- you want the published record rather than a title-search guess;
- you need BibTeX and a formatted citation from the same metadata.

Do not invent a DOI from a URL or cite a preprint's DOI as if it were the final article. Use the identifier printed on the version you read.

## Retrieve the record

1. Open **DOI to BibTeX**, or run `/doi-to-bibtex`.
2. Enter `10.xxxx/...` or paste a `doi.org` link.
3. Choose **Look up**.
4. Review the title, authors, year, container, volume, issue, pages, and URL.
5. Correct any field, then copy BibTeX, a formatted reference, or an in-text citation.

The lookup needs a network connection and contacts a public metadata service. Editing, validation, and citation formatting stay on your device.

## Verify the version

Compare the result with the publisher page or the document itself. Watch for online-first and issue dates, article numbers in the pages field, group authors, corrected titles, and records that point to an erratum.

:::tip[Several possible versions]
When a title search returns a preprint and a journal article, prefer the stable version your argument actually relies on and follow the venue's citation policy. The two records are not interchangeable merely because their titles match.
